They Forgot Security. Again!

The big ski/ride (yes, they’re “ride” as much as “ski” these days) resort companies (namely Alterra, Boyne and Vail) have announced major capital investments for the 2021/2022 season. That’s great, right? Shorter lift lines, more corduroy, and seamless guest services. Uh-oh. They forgot security. Again! Ski/ride resorts are the softest of the soft targets when it comes to unmitigated violence, which includes a mass shooting. Poke around this Website or delve into the book Soft Targets and Crowded Places: Hotels, Movie Theaters, Nightclubs, School Buses, Shopping Malls, Ski/Ride Resorts, and Summer Camps to learn more about why that’s so true. Apparently, for the ski/ride industry, proactive security remains largely dead, but they do so at their own peril. It sounds trite, but those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it: 1998 Vail Arson Attacks.
