Methodology

The mass shooting methodology used by Soft Targets and Crowded Places (ST-CP) is that which is used by Mother Jones and which is described in detail in their “A Guide to Mass Shootings in America” which is updated regularly.

Rather than rehash our position in detail here please read the following article we’ve previously written that explains in detail our position on this matter.

Mass Shootings—Which Aren’t and Which Are

Unlike other mass shooting databases, we don’t just report mass shootings, we research them thoroughly using both proprietary and public data sources and then we carefully and fully analyze them to determine which, if any, factor(s) made the mass shooting preventable.

We believe that the mere reporting of mass shootings is helpful from a public awareness standpoint, but it’s far more important to report it and point unequivocally to how it might have been prevented.

That’s what we do.
