The mass shooting on July 18, 1984, at a San Ysidro McDonald’s, San Diego, California, where 21 people were killed and 19 people were injured, is best known for being at the time the deadliest mass shooting by a lone gunman in U.S. history.

Editor’s Note:

Despite due diligence inquires and research, very little data has been located for this mass shooting. There appears to be two reasons for this. First, law enforcement transparency in 1982 was limited to nonexistent. Second, this mass shooting predated civilian use of the Internet, meaning this case probably exists/existed solely on hard copy records. With few exceptions, records in the physical possession of a municipal, county, state, and/or federal agency are subject to the Freedom of Information Act. However, these records can still be difficult to access. They are often unindexed and archived in cardboard boxes and stored in attics, basements, and warehouses. Also, agencies do not have to, and often don’t, retain indefinitely all records which are created by or submitted to them. Please consult the applicable governmental legal requirements.

Commercial Mass Market Video:

As previously stated, little data is available about this mass shooting. However, a commercial mass market video was released in 2016 titled “1984 San Diego McDonald’s Massacre: 77 Minutes“. This 1 hour and 38 minute video chronicles the event in what appears to be a factual manner. Numerous individuals directly involved in the mass shooting, from law enforcement officers to victims, are interviewed, which bolsters its creditability. However, if you watch it, bear in mind that it is the product of commercialism.
