Takeaway(s):
—It’s utterly ridiculous that an inconsequential event can trigger an individual to seek revenge and he or she (usually he) can acquire substantial firepower instantly. We wait longer in line at the supermarket to checkout than it probably took the perpetrator to buy those guns. Wake up America, this isn’t about the 2nd Amendment, it’s just common sense.
Incident Preventable Factor(s):
—Gun Laws Inadequate – Inadequate Gun Law(s) Contributed to Perpetrator(s) Execution of the Incident and Unnecessarily Accessible Perpetrator(s) Weapon(s) – Weapon(s) Was Unnecessarily Accessible to the Perpetrator:
“Early the next day Brown went to a gun store a few blocks from his home in Hialeah and purchased two shotguns, a semi-automatic rifle, and ammunition.” 1 At the time there was a 72-hour cooling-off period for handgun purchases in Dade County, Florida, but other guns could be purchased over the counter. 2
It should be noted that in response to this incident the Hialeah, Florida, City Council on September 28, 1982, “… voted, 6 to 1, to require a three-day waiting period for the purchase of rifles and shotguns.” However, the City Council voted October 12, 1982, to rescind the ordinance. “The reversal came after Council members heard gun dealers testify their businesses would suffer.” 3
Editor’s Note:
This perpetrator was a slowly ticking time bomb. However, his numerous inappropriate and questionable actions were more often than not followed by appropriate responses from others, mostly by his employers. But that didn’t prevent his slow slide into the depths of mental illness. Tragically, there were no red flags, only orange ones. (Not that most of us even knew what those were in 1982.) His slide into the darkness was inevitably going to coincide with a trigger (noun and verb), which it did on August 19, 1982. In a dispute over a $20.00 bill for supposedly substandard repair of his bicycle and his traveller’s cheque being refused, the perpetrator returned to the business where those two inconsequential events had occurred the next day and killed eight people and injured three others.
