Takeaway(s): —Armed personnel, good guys with guns, need to be in every venue. Incident Preventable Factor(s): —Venue Lacked Armed Individuals/Personnel – Venue Lacked Armed Individuals (Civilians)/Personnel (Military/Police/Security): Having armed individuals at venues of all types has proven to be very effective. Consider the following: Two people were shot and killed during a shooting at West Freeway Church of Christ, White Settlement, Texas, on December 29, 2019, before the lone perpetrator was fatally shot by Jack Wilson, a volunteer security team member. Wilson is a firearms instructor and a former reserve deputy sheriff in Hood County, Texas. Wilson indicated that five or six other members of the church assembly also drew their own weapons in response to the shooting. 1 Other examples of the effectiveness of having armed individuals at venues could be cited. It should also be noted that in addition to the obvious benefit of having armed personnel present is it’s deterrence factor. If more and more venues start the practice of having armed personnel some would be perpetrators might think twice about perpetrating an incident. Also, the presence of armed personnel at venues might provide others there with some degree of peace of mind. Editor’s Note: Despite due diligence, no other preventable factors could be identified for this incident. While the perpetrator did recently post and repost offensive and radical material numerous times in a variety of online mediums none of it appears to have been unlawful, and therefore protected by free speech.
